Highs, Lows, and Everything in Between

Emotions are one of the most bizarre occurances of which I am aware. Primeval instincts meant to ensure our survival have now been cultivated into quite possibly the greatest and most inspiring mystery of our existence. I'm particularly fascinated by the inspirations that come to us when our emotions are high.

Whenever great joy or great tragedy strikes, we are vulnerable to the greatest truths, and yet they flee as soon life returns to normalcy. Why is this, and how can we retain this newfound wisdom? The answer is not a simple one, that's for damn sure. Maybe the simple act of recognizing this fact is the first step.

Another possible answer may be to try and live our lives in a constant state of emotional flux. I would have to disagree. Part of the reasons that emotions are so speacial is that they are fleeting. Happiness would lose its uplifitng sweetness, sorrow its bitter yet necessary sting. A constant state of one emotion only leads to a numbness and lack of drive. This is why the drug market is flooded with so many anti-depressants right now. We need a neutral bearing upon which to judge the highs and lows of life. Think of it as a calibrating instrument that measures whether or not we are on the right track.

It's all so subjective, and yet so universal. There is no emotion that has not been felt by countless others throughout the course of history. Yet everytime we feel something within us, it feels so special. Emotions are the ultimate affirmation of unity and individuality. So is your love unique and special? No, but go ahead and think so anyway, because its your feelings, so do wth them what you wish.
